Venus's Day (Friday)

Sometimes while I’m driving Lyndon to school we’ll talk about one astrological concept that can get us through the day. When I was looking at the chart of the day this morning, what popped in my mind is Venus.

Friday is ruled by Venus, whose gifts are love, beauty, art, and peace. Today’s Libra moon is also ruled by Venus. So there’s a double message of peace and connection with others. Where the message gets nuanced is in the current sign of Venus, Sagittarius. Sagittarius is an independence-loving sign, seeking and striving for adventure and inspiration. And restlessness isn’t always a great remedy for peace. So how do we reconcile these energies?

That’s for all of us to explore personally, but just knowing that both coexist might help us through today. Maybe we can seek interactions with interesting people; maybe learning, reading, or exploring in some other way can bring us peace. And maybe taking time to remember our best adventures or start planning our next one can help us see where we have freedom and options and get reacquainted with inspiration again.

Going forward too during Venus retrograde

Venus retrograde Scorpio.png

Venus has been retrograde in Scorpio since October 5th. Venus retrogrades in a sign every eight years. Venus retrograde periods are opportunities to achieve greater ease within and a greater connection to others by turning our attention inwardly and by revisiting the past. Venus symbolizes our ability to recognize and reflect beauty, peace, and love; Scorpio allows us to penetrate the truth and unlock a power that’s been dormant or repressed.

What energies have your relationships recently been reflecting back to you? Which themes from the past have resurfaced? How have your interactions revealed unconscious patterns or shown you your own transformation over time?

The Capricorn moon joined the same degree as Pluto this morning, connecting our emotional state to this Venus retrograde period. It can feel heavy and deep. And yet today’s first quarter moon symbolically also compels us forward.

If you’d like, at some point today reflect on how you’ve been changing and why. Maybe the dates from the past 8 Venus in Scorpio retrograde cycles will help you; maybe something else you come across will. Love and relationships are so complex; we awkwardly but so sincerely attempt this dance of truly being seen. Give yourself some credit and some time.

Fight, freedom, and helping: Mars square Uranus under a Virgo sun

“Black Bird” by Benny Andrews

“Black Bird” by Benny Andrews

Today Mars in Aquarius squares Uranus in Taurus. This is a closing square that relates to their conjunction or joining in Aries in late February 2017.

Mars square Uranus is a stressful energy. I’m gonna be real with you. This one stumped me, because I always read the sky as a message from a God who loves us. Why would we ever need more stress???

Virgo season is about doing the best we can in the human condition. Discriminating how we can do better and be useful to each other here on earth. Today’s moon/Pluto conjunction symbolizes that it’s time for some deeper reflection.

Think about your effort and progress over the last year and a half. Is there any resource or relationship you have now that you didn’t have or realize then? Think about all the scary things you’ve faced and survived. How has a group joined or supported you?

Today try to feel any love that has helped settle you and notice any progress in your personal fight. Unfortunately, it’s not over. But in some ways that’s actually a good thing, because what we’ve learned can now help others.

In the end, the fight was never really about just us.

The zen of balloon animals: The Taurus moon aspecting Jupiter and Mercury

Lang’s outside power-washing our backyard furniture for my Mom’s birthday party. It might rain; my backyard has too many mosquitoes to sit comfortably outside anyway. But that simple act of effort, of his own volition, just makes me feel better. It strikes me as incredibly sweet. My preparations center around balloons and gemstone stickers. What I’m doing isn’t practical either, but my Mom’s festive and fancy. I think silly touches will make her smile.

Blend some imagination into real life today. If you’re bored or exhausted, something outside of you can give you inspiration, helping you see strategy and purpose: What your work and patience have been building and why.

The shadow of today’s Taurus moon is stubbornness. And no matter what your plans are, that could sap the energy and fun. If you feel yourself getting frustrated, try to absorb the fullness of the moment. There might be another way.

Our steady presence and that little over-the-top extra we add can help someone feel lifted and loved.

Be as you are, do what you can: Grand trine in earth

Today there’s a harmonious grand trine in the earth element: The moon and Uranus in Taurus, the sun in Virgo, and Saturn in Capricorn.

It's a good day to lose yourself in a task. Take a break from overthinking or drama. Let your senses soak up beauty and pleasure – a taste, a view, a hug.  Feel the satisfaction of stillness or productivity. In Italian there’s an expression, “lavoro ben fatto” – a job done well. It’s connected with honor and pride: Putting time and effort into the details; devotion to the craft itself.

Today enter that space, away from the crowd or noise: Just as you are. Simply do your best.

The good, the bad, and the ugly

The Aries moon opposed Venus in Libra this morning.

Yesterday’s NY Times Style magazine had an article about Ree Morton: “What Does it Mean to be a Mother and an Artist?” In the profile and in her art I see the Aries/Libra polarity. What are we compelled to do for our own sake? What would help the people we love?

In 1972 Morton sent her three young children to live with their father so that she could be an artist in New York. In 1975 she created this sweet and loving piece.

I can put myself in Morton’s shoes. And I can put myself in her kids’.

Aries/Libra sometimes works out as what helps me helps you and vice-versa. But sometimes we’re left longing and disappointed, or we have to let down someone we love. Sometimes different roles within us need to duke it out.

Today it can help to read the good parts of our story, but not in a fairytale way: Mixed in with the scary, hard, or bad parts -- trying to see them from different angles or in a new way.

It’s a better story that way, filled with complicated heroes, including us.

When the view isn't perfect: Waning Pisces moon

The last two mornings I’ve only been able to see the moon through the branches of my neighbor’s tree. It looks so promising and bright, and I crane my neck this way or that way to get a good look from different parts of my house. I write about the moon, and I read about the moon in posts from astrologer friends all over the world. And so when I can’t see the moon full-on it feels like a secret I can only hear parts of; two right numbers in a lottery ticket I was pretty sure would win.

This morning I put on shoes with my pajamas and go outside to get a straight look at the moon. I have to walk three houses down – past the tree and several rows of wires – before I can finally just see the moon. Not the moon over the Eiffel Tower or the moon over a vast safari, but the moon over my neighbor’s house in Queens. Me in mismatched pajamas, with wild hair and morning breath.

In the sky there’s a feeling of not-quite-right – a feeling we’re not where or what we could be.

As the moon enters the sign of Aries today at 12:35 p.m., some small movement compels us a bit closer to a goal. Tomorrow when Mercury reaches the degree of the last new moon, we’ll be able to see something more clearly. On October 8th when Mars finally passes the degree it turned retrograde in June, we’ll be able to move more decisively. But today at some point and in some small way, we just need to leave our own house.
