Tonight Venus enters the sign of Virgo before the Virgo New Moon at 1:29 a.m. EDT.
A Virgo client of mine once told me that the question that affects her most is, “Are you real?” With five planets in earth sign Virgo, this New Moon symbolizes becoming real. It also symbolizes becoming better. Virgo is never fully satisfied, and that motivation to improve, while it helps people with strong Virgo energy do great things, can also deplete or depress them. So how do we become better and yet also more real? Why would we want to?
"What is REAL?" asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?"
"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."
"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.
"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."
"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"
"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand." (-The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams)
In tonight’s final, balsamic moon hours, try to let go of any fears that keep you from feeling good enough. Try to release judgment for all the ways you might think you’re shabby. The power of Virgo energy and transits lies in the opportunity to find out we’re lovable and worthy even in our imperfection.
Now about that Venus in Virgo. In The Book of Neptune, Steven Forrest writes that “the main function of Venus is to reject people.” While Venus is in Virgo until October 14th this is especially pertinent. Use Virgo discrimination to lead you to the right company, friendships and partnerships. It’s not snobbishness. It’s self-preservation. The planet Venus started from the same material as the earth, but some astrophysicists believe it became uninhabitable because another object collided with it thousands of years ago, changing Venus’s atmosphere and reversing its orbit. Its oceans dried up. It can't support life. Now with a surface temperature of 900 degrees and a crushing air pressure that’s 75-100 times that of earth, astronomers call Venus the closest thing our galaxy has to Hell. If only Venus had ducked that object. In our own lives, if only we had. This cycle gives us a chance to learn or to reinforce healthy boundaries while also expressing who we’re becoming out into the world. Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, also needs to become her own bouncer. Our joy depends on it.
If you'd like, tonight or tomorrow write or contemplate New Moon intentions. Perform a ritual to mark a beginning and welcome Virgo attributes of helpfulness, modesty, skill, precision, analysis, service. See where this Virgo New Moon is happening in your chart and imagine how giving yourself over to some Virgo aims can help you integrate the individual promise you were born with, no matter what your sun sign.
Then try your best. In the next 29 days, grow in good works and humility. Grow in kindness. Let compassion balance honesty. But remember to cherish and protect yourself, too. In Tarot Virgo is represented by the Hermit card, acknowledging the Virgoan need to retreat. We all have our limits. Honoring yours will not only restore you but also help and teach those around you, too.
Throughout this cycle of becoming real and better, let a higher power's love for you heal and guide you. And please find ways to be your own faithful, really good friend.
