Total Eclipse of the Sun

My candle burns at both ends;It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends -- It gives a lovely light! (3).png

Is anyone else feeling burned-out?

I didn’t share what I wrote yesterday. I couldn’t tell if it made any sense. My head pounded. My throat hurt. I was pushing myself too hard. I closed my laptop and went dark for a day.

Today there will be a New Moon and total solar eclipse in Leo at 2:30 p.m. EDT. Every New Moon is a chance for a mysterious new beginning. The symbol of healing, imagination and regeneration goes dark, and we go forward in trust until it gets brighter and clearer. But today’s New Moon will also block the sun. Woah. Symbolically, that could be pretty scary.

Can it also be comforting?

Is there a part of your identity that has exhausted you lately? Has some role felt like it’s been driving you mercilessly or weighing you down? Can you use a freaking break?

Today is a break. We can go dark if we need to. Today a moon we can’t see reminds us that it’s there.

That’s a lot of symbolism to chew on. And yet there’s even more.

During an eclipse, the moon’s path around the earth intersects at two points with the ecliptic – the earth’s path around the sun. These points, the Aquarius south and Leo north nodes, symbolize our deepest wounds or repeated habits that have hurt us and the unfamiliar point of balance and new growth.

Which painful experiences or wounds have also helped you become distinctly who you are? Could any habits rooted in your wounded past be keeping you stuck today? Can you let them go to share more of your original self going forward? Can you try to enjoy the process?

As the moon's shadow and the darkening of the sun approach today, try to release what they symbolize: shame and pride. This is so hard but so crucial that it bears repeating: Try to release shame and pride. Acknowledge the hurts or disappointments of the past, and then try your best to let them go. If you'd like, set intentions and/or perform a ritual to mark the ending and the beginning.

Today we can equalize the sun and moon – our life force and identity with the deepest needs of our hearts. We don’t have to choose between them. They heal and vitalize each other.

Happy New Moon and Happy Solar Eclipse.
